Canoeing on the Arkansas

Chris Collins, Lyle Kauffman and Cliff Long from the Kansas Canoe Association hosted a Canoeing on the Arkansas evening for six matches.

Cliff spent time giving instruction to the matches on the proper way to get in and out of a canoe, the different paddle strokes to get you around, and how to assist others should their canoe tip over.

Then it was in to the water, where the Bigs and Littles were able to canoe up and down the Little Arkansas in downtown Wichita. Cliff noted that, "Even though you know there are houses and people on the other side of the bank, you get a sense of being away from it all while you are in a canoe on a river."

To back up that statement, Bigs and Littles spotted ducks (some were seen teaching this year's hatch to swim), geese, fish, water snakes, and even a beaver, all right in downtown Wichita.

None of the matches managed to tip their canoe, and, except for those who felt the need to cool off with a splash of river water, everyone stayed dry.

In addition, BBBS of Sedgwick County has an annual canoe trip to Tallequah, OK that 25-30 matches attend each year.
