Comments from a mentor...
E very now and then, I hear from folks who have stepped up to mentor a child in the outdoors. I never tire of these stories. I realize that not every mentoring relationship has these kinds of results, but many do.
A little background on volunteer Bruce Brown. He heard about the Pass It On - Outdoor Mentors program while listening to Scott Linden’s radio show last year and heard Scott talking with me about mentoring kids in the outdoors. When Bruce got home, he called and said he wanted to get involved. We hooked him up with the local Big Brothers Big Sisters agency in his community and he got matched with George.
Bruce has taken George hunting and fishing and spent time with him outdoors. He sent me the following email:
Dear Mike,
I just got a report from George’s mom. They had his first parent teacher conference this week. She said it was the best report's he has ever gotten. George has five A's and three C's and he also just won the most improved kid award in P.E. class.
I guess the principal even told George's mom that he didn’t know where the "old George" has went to, because no one recognizes the "new George". He sits still in class, and pays attention to his teachers and has really made huge improvements over the years past.
GO GEORGE!!!
Sincerly,
Bruce Brown

We have lots of kids all across the country who need a mentor like Bruce who will give them a chance to experience the great outdoors we all know and love. And who knows, maybe their grades will go up and they’ll pay more attention in school. And I’ll bet they will come to appreciate the great outdoors as well!
I want to thank Scott Linden for helping to make this happen. Getting the word out so that more folks get involved is a huge challenge. When folks like Scott help us with that, it pays dividends.
I also want to thank all of the mentors who spend time taking kids outdoors. I would bet that more than just a few have similar stories to Bruce’s.
We are working hard to give more kids like George the opportunity to spend time outdoors with a mentor like Bruce. We need your help in making that happen. Become a mentor. Or make a financial donation. Or whatever it is that you can to help us in our efforts to get more kids outdoors. |
