Outdoor Mentor Sculpture Series Announced

Pass It On - Outdoor Mentors has announced the Outdoor Mentor Series, a series of sculptures by noted wildlife artist John Parsons which feature a mentor and child enjoying various outdoor activities. The first sculpture in the series, “Who’s Huntin’ Who” will be featured at Pheasants Forever, Quail Forever and Whitetails Unlimited banquets across the country beginning this fall.

“John has helped the Pass It On - Outdoor Mentors program since we first began, processing the deer harvested on the youth deer hunts at his facility in Derby, KS,”
stated Mike Christensen, President of Pass It On - Outdoor Mentors, Inc. “In the spring of ‘07, I asked John if he would be interested in helping us with a sculpture that we could use as a fundraising project for Pass It On - Outdoor Mentors. I didn’t have a real well thought out plan, but with John’s help we got it rolling.”

John went to work and had “Who’s Huntin’ Who” ready to show to prospective groups by the fall. John has agreed to a series of sculptures that will feature an outdoor mentoring scene, with each series being offered to conservation groups across the country. “In addition to being remarkable pieces, this gives us a chance to get our outdoor mentoring message in front of the sportsmen and women we need to join us in our efforts to give today’s kids a chance to experience the outdoors we all know and love,” said Christensen.

Parsons’ work is now featured in the John Parsons Signature Series in the Cabelas catalogs and stores. He was selected as Artist of the Year for the Foundation for North American Wild Sheep after only one year of sculpting. John was asked to produce artwork for the WaterWalk in Wichita, which now features his River Run, a sculpture of four white-tailed deer and Fighting Bucks, a deer trio locked in combat.

One of the biggest challenges facing the Pass It On - Outdoor Mentors program is getting the word out to the outdoorsmen and women the urgency of our efforts to get children outdoors. Having a striking sculpture being offered at every Pheasants Forever, Quail Forever and Whitetails Unlimited fundraising banquet across the country gets the message in front of over 200,000 sportsmen and women.

With innovative programs like the Outdoor Mentors Sculpture Series, Pass It On - Outdoor Mentors hopes that more outdoorsmen and women will hear the call to mentor a child in the outdoors. “Too many kids are spending too little time outdoors,” stated Christensen. “Last August, we hosted an evening at the trap range for some kids from Dodge City. A 12-year old boy shocked all of the volunteers who showed up to work with the kids that evening when he told them that driving to the range was the first time in his life he had ever been on a dirt road.”

Unfortunately, this is becoming common place rather than the exception. Pass It On - Outdoor Mentors is working to provide opportunities for children to experience the outdoors with a caring adult mentor. “We are extremely honored to have John’s help with this effort,” said Christensen.
